Flour Sifter Attachment for Sana Grain Mills
The Flour Sifter Attachment turns your Sana Grain Mill or Sana Grain Mill MAX into a flour sifter. It separates freshly milled wholemeal into a lighter flour and a coarser bran, so you can bake airy cakes, pastry and softer bread from grain you milled yourself.
It runs on your mill’s own motor and comes with three interchangeable screens — fine, medium and coarse — so you decide how much of the bran stays in your flour.
Lighter Flour From Your Own Grain
Freshly milled wholemeal flour contains the whole grain: bran, germ and endosperm. That is exactly what you want for a hearty loaf, but not always for a sponge cake, a flaky pastry or a pizza base with an open, airy crumb.
The sifter lets you choose. Mill your grain as usual, pour the flour into the sifter, and it separates a finer, lighter flour from the coarser bran. You still start from fresh grain, and you decide how much of the bran goes back in.
The bran left in the cylinder is not waste. Stir it into muesli, porridge or a seeded loaf, or add some back to the sifted flour for a light wholemeal.
Fits Your Sana Grain Mill
The sifter is made for the Sana Grain Mill and the Sana Grain Mill MAX. It has no motor of its own: it screws onto the mill in place of the hopper and uses the mill’s motor to turn its brushes.
To fit it, switch off the mill, turn the hopper towards coarse until it lifts off, remove the upper millstone and set the white plastic ring in its place. Screw the sifter on with one full turn and it is ready to use.
When you are done, it unscrews the same way and your mill goes straight back to milling. Always turn the sifter by its wooden base, never by the clear cylinder.
Three Screens, Three Kinds of Flour
Three interchangeable screens come in the box, each with a different mesh: fine at 0.63 mm, medium at 0.80 mm and coarse at 1.25 mm.
Use the fine screen for the lightest flour, for cakes, biscuits, pastry and delicate bakes. The medium screen is a good everyday choice for rolls, pizza bases and lighter bread. The coarse screen holds back only the largest bran particles and keeps more of the wholegrain flavour and texture.
Changing screens takes a minute: lift off the clear cylinder, unscrew the brush holder, swap the screen and screw the holder back on by hand.
Soft Brushes Do the Work
Inside the sifter, a set of brushes turns over the screen, driven by your grain mill. They sweep the flour across the mesh and push the fine particles through, while the coarser bran stays behind in the cylinder.
The sifted flour comes out of the mill’s outlet into a bowl, just as it does when you mill. Switch off once the flour has passed through, empty the bran and sift the next batch.
Each fill takes approximately 400 g of flour, enough for a cake, a batch of pastry or a small loaf. For larger recipes, sift in batches.
Made to Match Your Mill
The sifter is made from the same kind of natural materials as your Sana mill: an oiled solid beech lid, an oiled beech plywood base and a clear acrylic cylinder, so you can watch the flour as it is sifted.
At 27 cm high and 13 cm across, and weighing about 0.9 kg, it stores easily in a cupboard beside your mill.
It is designed for dry, freshly milled flour from grains such as wheat, rye, spelt, rice and maize. It is not suitable for oil seeds or nuts, which would smear and clog the screen.

Questions About the Flour Sifter
Which grain mills does the sifter fit?
It fits the Sana Grain Mill (360W) and the Sana Grain Mill MAX (600W). It screws onto the mill in place of the hopper and runs on the mill’s own motor.
Does it mill and sift at the same time?
No. You mill your grain first, as usual. Then you take off the hopper and the upper millstone, set the white plastic ring in the millstone’s place, screw the sifter on with one full turn and sift the flour you have just milled.
How do I set it before sifting?
With the sifter screwed on, switch the mill on and turn the sifter towards fine until the brushes start turning, then a further quarter turn. Switch off, pour in the flour, put the lid on, place a bowl under the outlet and switch on again. Switch off once the flour has passed through.
How much flour can I sift at once?
Each fill takes approximately 400 g of flour. For larger recipes, sift in batches and empty the bran from the cylinder between them.
Which screen should I use?
The fine 0.63 mm screen gives the lightest flour, for cakes, biscuits and pastry. The medium 0.80 mm screen suits rolls, pizza bases and lighter bread. The coarse 1.25 mm screen holds back only the largest bran particles and keeps more of the wholegrain character.
What happens to the bran?
The bran stays behind in the clear cylinder. You can add some of it back to the sifted flour for a light wholemeal, or use it in muesli, porridge and seeded breads.
Can I sift nuts or oil seeds?
No. The sifter is made for dry flour from grains such as wheat, rye, spelt, rice and maize. Nuts and oil seeds would smear the screen and brushes.
What’s in the box?
The sifter with its oiled beech lid, beech plywood base and clear acrylic cylinder, the brush assembly, the white plastic ring that takes the place of the upper millstone, and three screens: fine, medium and coarse.
What does the warranty cover?
The Flour Sifter Attachment carries a 3-year warranty, handled in South Africa by Sana South Africa.
